Selenium Complexes

Selenium is an essential trace mineral that plays a crucial role in various bodily functions. It acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting cells from damage caused by free radicals. Selenium is also necessary for producing thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism and growth. Additionally, it supports immune function and may play a role in reproduction and fertility.

While selenium is present in various foods, the UK faces a unique challenge due to low selenium levels in the soil. As a result, many crops grown in the UK have low selenium content, leading to insufficient dietary intake for a significant portion of the population. This can increase the risk of selenium deficiency, associated with several health issues, including Keshan disease, Kashin-Beck disease, and an increased risk of certain cancers.

The UK reference nutrient intake (RNI) for selenium is 75 µg/day for men and 60 µg/day for women. However, surveys have shown that many of the population fails to meet these recommendations. Some experts recommend consuming selenium-rich foods such as Brazil nuts, fish, and meat or considering selenium supplements to address this issue. However, consulting with a healthcare professional before taking supplements is essential to ensure appropriate dosage and avoid potential adverse effects.
