Red Food Dye Is Everywhere & It's Hurting Us - What Parents Must Know

Here’s a shocker: the food industry pumps over 6 million kilograms of artificial dyes into our food supply every single year. That’s a lot of colour, but definitely not the kind you want in your body. You might think you’re safe because you don’t eat rainbow cupcakes or slushies every day, but red dye is sneaky. It shows up in the most unexpected places: cereals, sauces, drinks, yogurts, and even so-called healthy snacks.

If it looks red, chances are it’s been artificially coloured. And the problem isn’t just the pretty shade, it’s the baggage that comes with it. Red food dyes, like Red 40 and Carmine, have been linked to hyperactivity in children, hormone disruption, and possible developmental concerns. Research has also pointed to increased estrogen levels, allergic reactions, DNA damage, and even a potential link to cancer. Not exactly something you’d sprinkle on your child’s fruit skewer, right?

Speaking of fruit skewers, let me share a quick story. My child’s school, in their best intentions, once swapped donut sales for fruit skewers to offer something healthier. A brilliant idea! Except… they coated the fruit with bright rainbow sugary sprinkles. It looked like a unicorn had exploded over the food. My child grabbed one, of course, and surprise, surprise, spent the entire afternoon bouncing off the walls. And we wonder why.

Now, I know avoiding artificial dyes isn’t easy, especially with children. But being label-savvy helps. Look out for ingredients like Red 40, Allura Red, or anything with a number attached. As a rule of thumb: the less colourful and artificial the ingredient list, the better.

Before I sign off, here’s one last science-backed tip from my kitchen to yours: take apple cider vinegar capsules before your meals. Studies show they can reduce insulin spikes by up to 30%, which means steadier blood sugar, fewer cravings, and better fat metabolism.
